  1. Please, can you tell me what are the steps to do it?
Why Polysorbate 80, what role does it have here?

    • The polysorbate 80 allows the fragrance or essential oils to mix with the water/witch hazel/glycerin mixture.

Procedure would be to mix up the water, witch hazel, and glycerin mixture in a bowl or measuring cup. In a separate measure cup or bowl mix the poly 80 and fragrance oil. Then combine the two.

If you did not use the poly 80 the fragrance oil would separate from the water mixture and it would need to be shaken every time. The addition of the poly 80 keeps it blended.

    • It works as a emulsifying between the oil and water

  2. Is a preservative necessary with this recipe because you are using water?
How long should this last without a preservative? Thank you!

    • Yes. I do not know how long it would last without preservative additive, but I would not recommend selling product without preservative. You could make small batches for yourself if you do not choose to add preservative and use it quickly.

    • Debbie

By weight of your batch usually you use 0.5-1.5%. It depends on the preservative you are using, you should follow the guidelines of the preservative you are using and add that amount in percentage. I hope that helps

  4. Can you recommend a preservative to use in this?

    • You could use optiphen or germbaden 2. Those are the only two I actually work with but I am sure others would work. You just have to read up to see what rates and preservative systems work best on each product

  5. Could I change the “witch hazel” for water or another ingredient?

    Oct 26, 2018 Reply
    • You could try. I dont think water is a great choice but anything including a mix of water and alcohol would be better. You want it to dry out quickly. Cyclomethicone is also very nice, because it evaporates and leaves a nice skin feel but it may stain clothing since its a silicone.

    • It gives a nice feel to the skin, and is hydrating.

  7. I used this recipe and my product is cloudy. It almost looks like skim milk. I figured I’d let it sit out overnight but it hasn’t cleared and there’s a thicker white layer at the bottle. What am I doing wrong?

    Oct 27, 2020 Reply
    • This formulation does produce a milky white color, however, there should be no settling. Mix the poly and fragrance together, then mix the remaining ingredients together and then add them to the poly/frag. I hope that helps

  8. This would work in a roll on also?

    Apr 3, 2021 Reply
    • It would work, however a body spray mist will put a lot more product out per pump than a roll on. I think a stronger perfume type product would be a better application for a roll on dispenser.

  9. Do we need polysorbate for roll on? Carrier oils can blend in essential oils, right?

    May 2, 2021 Reply
    • For the most part yes they can.
